Top Boy - Brand New Drama

Tonight marks the grand release of  a new four part Thriller Entitled Top Boy. Featuring Ashley Walters(Bullet boy),Kierston Wareing (from luther),Kane Robinson and Scorcher no doubt.
“Written by screenwriter and novelist Ronan Bennett (Public Enemies, The Hamburg Cell) and produced by Cowboy Films (The Last King of Scotland, Poppy Shakespeare) for Channel 4, Top Boy is a 4 X 60’ original drama about young lives lived on the edge. The drama looks beyond the headlines about youth crime and delves into the personal stories of those involved”.

SYNOPSIS
Ashley Walters  plays Dushane,  a clever charming drug dealer/gang leader who has aspirations of becoming “Top Boy” (at the top of the drug dealing food chain). Along with his right hand man Sully (Kane Robinson) they begin their violent quest to take over the supply of drugs in Summerhouse Estate.
The story also follows the lives of  Ra’Nell (Malcolm Kamulete)  “a bright 13-year-old struggling to create a stable home environment for his mentally ill mother Lisa (Sharon Duncan Brewster)” and his best friend Gem (Giacomo Mancini) who desperately want to become a member of  Dushane’s gang.  Heather (Kierston Wareing), pregnant and penniless, is determined to give her baby the chances she never had – “even if it means doing one wrong thing to get to the right place”.

MY VIEW
So, here we are in 2011 going onto 2012 and we’re  still seeing reincarnations of bullet boy and kidulthood. Why the cynicism I hear you ask, because I feel shows like this  negativly portrays the lives of young people growing up in the inner city.Is this all we have? Im surprised that rioting wasn’t somehow worked into the story.  We all must remember that this is fiction and not a documentary.
Top Boy will be featured on channel 4 at 10.00pm on the 31st october and will continue for 3 days.
